Haiti’s Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe announced his resignation on Sunday in the wake of widespread anti-government protests in the capital, Port-au-Prince.<br /><br /> “I am leaving the post of prime minister this evening with a feeling of accomplishment,” Lamothe said in a televised address, Haiti’s communication ministry tweeted from its official account.<br /><br /> “Je quitte le poste de Premier ministre ce soir, avec le sentiment du devoir accompli." – LaurentLamothe pic.twitter.com/ULc6MTbZyr— Radio Tele Galaxie (rtvgalaxie) December 14, 2014<br /> <br /><br /> Some of the demonstrations in Haiti’s capital have turned violent as protesters have grown increasingly angry over the delay of elections which were expected to have been held in 2011. <br /><br /> On Saturday, one man was shot dead during protests in the Haitian capital calling for both the president and prime minister to resign.<br /><br /> Lamothe’s resignation had been widely expected after President Michel Martelly agreed on Friday to ask him to step down after accepting the recommendations of a presidential commission.<br /><br /> President Martelly is expected to meet with government officials on Monday to discuss the commission’s report which also recommended disbanding Haiti’s electoral council and freeing political prisoners.
