ROUGH CUT, NO REPORTER NARRATION

The British Army football team took on a German Armed Forces XI on Wednesday (December 17) in honour of the Christmas truce held between British and German soldiers during World War One.

On Christmas day in 1914 soldiers briefly stopped fighting and walked out of their trenches to exchange Christmas greetings with each other.

First hand accounts from the time record a game of football breaking out between the soldiers, although some historians suggest it was more likely to have been a kick about rather than a full match.

What is certain, however, is that the fabled Game of Truce has become a defining image of the Christmas Truce.

The British team ended up the victors in Wednesday's match, winning 1-0 after an early first half goal.

Proceeds from the match will be donated to the Royal British Legion and an equivalent German military charity.
