This is why it’s best to stand away from a volcano that’s filled with hot lava.

Cameraman Bradley Ambrose won’t be repeating the mistake after getting sprayed with molten rock when he got too close to Ambrym Island’s Marum lava lake, in Vanuatu.

‘That was probably my closest call ever to being completely covered in lava bombs,’ said the New Zealander, in a YouTube video of the incident he posted last Sunday.

He added: ‘I was filming on the edge when an extremely large pulse of gas just came out and caused a huge lava splatter that basically covered this entire area. I was in the middle of it. I just ran.

‘There’s not one shot that’s worth that so I’m going to back off and get some more protective gear on.’

Mr Ambrose’s bravery is admirable – but perhaps he should film from a safer distance next time, considering the lava in the volcano peaked at 800 degrees Celsius.
