Haiti has installed a Provisional Electoral Council to organise elections, which have been delayed by more than three years.<br /><br /> Members of the United Nations Security Council are in Port-au-Prince to pressure President Michel Martelly to hold local and parliamentary polls.<br /><br /> He’s ruled by decree since the dissolution of parliament two weeks ago.<br /><br /> Following the talks, Samantha Power US Ambassador to the UN told the media:<br /><br /> “This council also expressed to the President Martelly and his ministers, the same disappointment that the Haitian people probably feel, that these efforts to seek consensus and to find a path forward did not prevent the parliament from lapsing and did not produce the necessary compromise.”<br /><br /> Thousands of Haitians have protested in recent days, calling for Martelly to resign.<br /><br /> The president has promised that elections can be held in the next few months. He’s also due to step down later this year.
