Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says a preliminary nuclear deal shows that his country’s enrichment work poses no ‘threat’ to the world.

He was speaking in Tehran, after Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived back in the country, after sealing the outline accord with world powers in Switzerland.

Tehran has agreed to curb, but not abandon, its atomic activities in exchange for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

“Until yesterday, everyone was saying that enrichment is a threat to the region and the world. Now everyone has accepted that the enrichment on Iranian soil is not a threat to anyone,” said Rouhani.

The outline accord was announced after eight days of talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

It follows 12 years of brinkmanship, threat and confrontation amid fears that Iran’s aim has been to build an atomic bomb. A claim it denies.

But Rouhani has warned that Iran will only keep to its promise, if other parties stick to their side of the deal too.
