An American officer has been killed in a shootout with an Afghan soldier in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan, according to a US official.<br /><br />NATO confirms one of its soldiers died in the attack, but policy dictates it does not reveal the nationality of the victim.<br /><br />US-based reports suggest the Afghan soldier opened fire on a group of American troops in the city, injuring a handful of others before he too was shot dead.<br /><br />An Afghan soldier is reportedly being questioned in connection with the attack. <br /><br />The shooting took place near the compound of the provincial governor in Jalalabad. It came shortly after a meeting between some of Afghanistan’s provincial leaders and a US Embassy official. <br /><br />The Embassy confirmed all its staff were accounted for and had been safely returned to their mission headquarters.<br /><br />Fall in ‘insider attacks’<br /><br />The frequency of so-called ‘insider attacks’ in Afghanistan has seen a sharp decline in 2015 since most foreign forces withdrew in 2014.<br /><br />Some 12,000 NATO troops
