An Italian tourist on a trip to Alaska with a group of friends was killed on Sunday when a chunk of ice fell off a glacier and struck him.<br /><br />Alexander Hellweger was among a group of eight tourists who took a helicopter ride to the head of Lake George Glacier on Sunday afternoon.<br /><br />After arriving at the scenic spot, seven of the group were getting ready to take a group photo. Hellweger was away from the group and was trying to make his way back when a piece of ice fell from the glacier and struck him.<br /><br />The rescue operation had to be halted because of approaching darkness and the potential for further ice falls. Rescuers recovered Hellweger’s body at around 2 p.m. the next day.
