Fukushima: trenches sealed off to prevent flow of radioactive water into the ocean

Tokyo Electric Company this week began cement-pouring work to block up underground trenches at the Fukushima Daichi nuclear power plant.<br /><br />As the trenches are being filled, radioactive water is being drawn up from the No. 2 reactor in an effort to control the overflow and leakage of highly contaminated water into the ground.<br /><br />The cement work got underway after an attempt to seal off the trenches earlier this month failed to halt water from leaking.<br /><br />TEPCO will begin filling the trenches at the No. 3 reactor next month and expects to finish the work by the end of March 2015.
