Mexico’s Attorney General, Jesus Murillo Karam, held a press conference on Friday to reveal the discovery of evidence of the mortal remains of 43 student teachers, missing since September 26. The students were abducted from a group of roughly 80 that were ambushed by municipal police in the town of Iguala, Guerrero state, on the night of Sept. 26 on their way to a political event.

Over 70 people have been arrested in the hunt for the students’ abductors, including the mayor Iguala, Jose Luis Abarca, and his wife, Maria de los Angeles Pineda. They are suspected of ordering police and a local drug gang, Guerreros Unidos, to attack the students.

In video confessions extracted by police from three arrested members of the Guerreros Unidos cartel, it is claimed that the students were transported by flatbed truck from the site of the police ambush to a remote garbage dump. 15 of the students suffocated on the journey, then the rest were killed at the dump while a large fire was prepared.

The gang members say the students’ bodies were stacked atop a pile of discarded tires, cord wood, and plastic, then doused in petrol and set ablaze. Gang members maintained the fire for 15 hours, adding fuel periodically.

The next day, September 27, around 5:30pm, gang members pulverized the bones and shoveled ash into trash bags. The bags of ash, with bone fragments and teeth, were then dumped in the San Juan river, where some bags washed ashore.

Forensic investigators are combing the site of fire at the dump and have already recovered hundreds of bone fragments and bullet casings. The bone fragments are being sent to a specialized lab in Austria in an attempt to extract DNA and positively determine whether the bones are those of the missing students.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
