An ageing former military aircraft owned by a civilian contractor crashed as it approached a military base in Southern California on Wednesday.<br /><br />The Hawker Hunter MK-58 with a seasoned pilot on board was about to land at the Point Mugu Naval Air Station at around 5:15 p.m. when it crashed into a strawberry field, according to CBS Los Angeles. A witness quoted by CBS Los Angeles said that after the crash a plume of smoke was visible for miles away.<br /><br />The Los Angeles Times quoted Kimberly Gearhart, a spokeswoman for Naval Base Ventura County, as saying that the plane was owned by Airborne Tactical Advantage, a military contractor that simulates threats during training missions.<br /><br />The pilot was a civilian who worked for the contractor. He was declared dead at the scene.
