Fast forward to 1914, the Queen of the St. Lawrence River, the SS Kingston, a mighty steamship that converted water to steam to drive her heavy screws, was once a popular ferry for travel down the St. Lawrence. Before the invention of buses, trains and cars, boats were the fastest form of travel through the region. <br />Today we think of travel in terms of how much time it takes us to reach our destination. It could take minutes or hours from start to finish. But a hundred years ago, when rivers and lakes were the highways that connected places, travel was measured in days and weeks.
