According to the Wall Street Journal, Sheinbein opened fire inside a cell block restroom, wounding at least three guards. At least one guard was shot at close range in the chest.

After shooting the guards, Sheinbein retreated to a cell, where 90 minutes passed before police special forces arrived, according to the Wall Street Journal. A standoff-ensued, with Sheinbein opening fire, wounding three more officers, as police returned fire. Sheinbein was pronounced dead at the scene, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Sheinbein, a citizen of Israel and the United States, fled the U.S. for Israel after murdering 19-year-old Alfredo Tello Jr. in Montgomery, Maryland in 1997.
