Colombia seizes 1.45 tonnes of cocaine bound for the Dominican Republic

Originally Published On November 4, 2013<br /><br />Colombian authorities seized 1.45 tonnes (3,197 lbs) of cocaine worth $43 million aboard a speedboat in the Caribbean following a tip from U.S. anti-drug agents, according to a report by the BBC. <br /><br />Colombian officials announced the massive joint bust on Sunday, which followed a tip off from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.<br /><br />The speedboat departed the northern Colombian town of Manaure and was headed toward the Dominican Republic.<br /><br />The boat was in international waters when it was intercepted by the Colombian navy.<br /><br />Five suspects were detained, four Venezuelans and a Colombian.<br /><br />The drugs allegedly belonged to Los Urabenos, a gang that operates in northern Colombia.<br /><br />The gang is one of the groups categorized by Colombian authorities as a Bacrim, short for "bandas criminales," or criminal gangs.<br /><br />The five suspects were transferred to Tampa, Florida and are currently being held in custody.
