Originally published on September 7, 2013 <br /><br />A Swedish city is migrating three kilometres east due to fracturing and deformation caused by the iron ore mines underneath it.<br /><br />In order to extract more iron ore from the valuable mineral deposit, the state-controlled mining company Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB has dug deeper into Mount Kiirunavaara, which neighbours the mining town of Kiruna.<br /><br />This has led to the fracturing and deformation of the land beneath the town and forcing the entire town to move three kilometres east over the next two decades.<br /><br />Kiruna is located 145 kilometres above the Arctic Circle and is home to the world's largest iron ore mine.<br /><br />--------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
