Originally published on August 1, 2013<br /><br />An off-duty Texan police officer shot dead a teenager suspected of shoplifting from a Walmart following a foot chase and struggle in woods adjacent to the supermarket.<br /><br />Nineteen-year-old Russell Rios allegedly tried to pocket items without paying at the Conroe Walmart. Store security confronted him but he escaped and fled the store.<br /><br />The security staff chased after him across the store's car park. An off-duty police officers noticed the men running after the teenager and offered to help. He joined the chase and followed Rios into a nearby wooded area.<br /><br />About nine meters (30 feet) in, he caught Rios and a violent struggle ensued. The officer says Rios began to choke him. He then drew a handgun and shot the teenager once, killing him.<br /><br />The officer was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
