The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARB) charges that the government's military actions against them represent a setback for the peace process. A FARC commander was killed in a government attack, which comes on the heels of other military operations against the rebels earlier this month, in which dozens of guerrilla fighters have died. While the rebels have suspended their unilateral indefinite truce, they nonetheless call on the government to accept their proposal for a bilateral ceasefire. Their call has been echoed by social movements and peace advocates. The rural population, meanwhile, has responded to the escalating military confrontations between the government and the FARC with terror, uncertainty, and fear, as hundreds have been displaced by the renewed hostilities.
