Protests by the radical teachers movement in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca turned violent when demonstrators calling for a boycott of this Sunday's mid-term elections attacked and set fire to local Electoral Institute offices and destroying ballots and other materials to be used on election day. The Electoral Institute is in charge of organizing Sunday's vote. The teachers, organized in the National Teachers Coordinating Committee, said that they would seize the 11 local Electoral Institute offices in the state. The boycott actions coincide with the call for a general strike by the dissident teachers. teleSUR
