Opposition parties should form Turkey’s next government after the ruling AKP failed to secure a majority, the head of the main opposition CHP party has said.

The AKP won almost 41 percent of the vote in recent elections and would need to find a junior partner to form a government.

“If we want to respect the will of people, if we want to meet their expectations, we have to form a government that will meet the expectations of 60 percent of society,” said Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, leader of the CHP (Republican People’s Party).

President Tayyip Erdogan has said that he plans to grant the AKP the mandate to form a government.

He has also added that a snap election would be “inevitable” if parties fail to form a new government within a constitutional time limit of 45 days.

An opposition coalition looks unlikely, with ideological differences between nationalists, leftist Kurds and the secular CHP.
