Come Back Sweet Papa - Portena Jazz Band 1972
It wasn’t until the early nineties that I found out about Argentina’s Portena Jazz Band. A Canadian friend who had a large collection of LP’s told me and then gave me four of the early Portena LP’s. Already then I was amazed by their sound, their passion and their perfection to recreate the early sounds of jazz without having to copy every played solo. I am just checking through these LP’s from the sixties and quite a few members were replaced, but the band never lost the essence of playing good early big band jazz.
In this clip they feature washboard player Norberto Mendez in a Louis Armstrong’s ‘Come Back Sweet Papa’, which Louis recorded first with his Hot Five in 1926

In the band in 1972: Martin Muller co,leader, Jose A Conci co, Luis Terreil tb, Ignacio Mazzanti ss, as, ts, Ricardo Martin as, cl, Gino Castello as, cl,
Tito Romero pno, Raul Grano Cortines bjo, Saul Lotenberg tu and Norberto Mendez dm, wb
