Ecuadorean authorities unasked and foiled a coup planned for later today to coincide with anti-government protests. The right-wing opposition planned its move ahead of Pope Francis' visit to Ecuador on Sunday. President Rafael Correa noted that the plotters sought to use violence against a government enjoying broad popular support and international backing and that the attempted coup had been planned for quite some time, and was not due to the differences on proposed tax measures. teleSUR
