Thousands of supporters filled Quito’s main plaza to defend the government of President Rafael Correa from a coup planned by the right-wing opposition. Although three opposition marches took place in the city, pro-government demonstrators celebrated the achievements of the Correa government. In a festive atmosphere, the President himself stepped out onto the balcony to lead songs and assure the crowd that the Citizens’ Revolution will proceed.
