Thousands of Communist Party (KKE) supporters gathered in front of Greece’s parliament building in central Athens on Thursday (July 2).<br /><br /> Their leader expressed his opposition to the current government. He said that whatever the outcome of Sunday’s referendum on austerity demands, the Greek people would be the ones who suffer. <br /><br /> Euronews correspondent Akis Tatsis reported: “Protesters set fire to the EU flag in the centre of Athens, close to the prime minister’s residence.<br /><br /> “Earlier, one of them climbed onto the European Commission building .. hanging on the balcony a banner with anti-European slogans”<br /><br /> The protester unfurled a banner reading “forward people” during the demonstration. <br /><br /> One Communist Party supporter told Reuters TV that Greeks should vote “no” to stop what he described as “blackmail.”<br /><br /> Greek police later used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse a crowd of far-left protesters.
