German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that new allegations of US spying on senior German government officials’ telephones need to be clarified “as quickly as possible.”<br /><br /> Relations between the two nations took a diplomatic blow two years ago when WikiLeaks reported German chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone had been monitored by the US National Security Agency.<br /><br /> “It is important that we clarify as quickly as possible about what’s really true with regard to the reports we’re reading these days,” Steinmeier told reporters.<br /><br /> A new list of phone numbers allege that the chancellor was not the only senior official the agency eavesdropped on.<br /><br /> Steinmeier said he hopes that Washington would cooperate with his investigation.
