The trial of the former president of Chad has begun in Senegal. Hissene Habre appears on charges of crimes against humanity after being brought to the court by force.<br /><br /> It is the first time that a former leader of an African country has been put on trial in another.<br /><br /> Habre is accused of being responsible for the torture and killing of thousands of people while ruling his central African country from 1982 to 1990. <br /><br /> The trial marks the end of a fifteen-year battle to bring him to justice in Senegal where he has lived in exile after being toppled in a coup.<br /><br /> The 72-year-old has been held in custody since his arrest two years ago.<br /><br /> If found guilty the 72-year-old faces sentences ranging from 30 years to life with hard labour.
