Azerbaijan: live from Baku: interview with the lawyer of Leyla Yunus and Arif Yunusov

2015-08-10 2 Dailymotion

Leyla Yunus, an activist for peace and reconciliation between her country, Azerbaijan, and neighbouring Armenia, currently faces 11 years in prison for her work defending human rights.

During the most recent hearing, on 10 August 2015, she was again denied the right to sit next to her lawyer, Ramiz Mammadov (interviewed above). Instead she was kept in a glass cage, a violation of the right to be presumed innocent. The hearing was cut short when Leyla Yunus refused the help of Azeri-Russian translators, who she deemed incompetent. The trial was adjourned until 13 August 2015.

Leyla and her husband Arif, also on trial facing trumped-up charges, have been detained for more than a year. Both have been denied necessary medical treatment and are suffering greatly in detention.
