A former television comic, a wealthy businessman and a former first lady were ahead in early returns in voting for Guatemala's next leader, days after the Central American nation's president resigned over a corruption scandal.
With about 51 per cent of polling stations reporting, TV comedian Jimmy Morales, who has never held elective office, was leading with 26.5 per cent of the vote.
He was followed by businessman and longtime politician Manuel Baldizon, with about 18 per cent, and ex-first lady Sandra Torres, with about 17 per cent.
If no one candidate in the field of 14 gets a simple majority, the top two finishers would advance to a runoff to be held Oct. 25.
