True to form, Steve Spurrier matter-of-factly announced his resignation Tuesday - not retirement - as South Carolina's football coach and said he was looking forward to the next chapter of his life.<br />"The last several years I always get asked how much longer are you going to coach," Spurrier said in a news conference at Williams-Brice Stadium.<br />"My answer is always the same.<br />As long as we keep winning, everybody's happy we're ranked, I guess I can go several more years.<br />But if it starts going south, it starts going bad, I need to get out.<br />You can't keep a coach who's done it as long as I have when it goes the wrong direction."<br />Spurrier, 70, made it clear that South Carolina's performance this season and downward trend that began last season was the reason he felt the need to step aside.
