Play-through of Golden Axe on the Atari ST. It's almost identical to the Amiga version, except for the ugly borders. It also seems a bit more sluggish and it's quite noticeably slower when there are several sprites on screen at once. The port is of the arcade version rather than the Mega Drive one. Unfortunately the one-button control scheme and several other gameplay-altering issues mean that this is a poor conversion. <br /> <br />Things that are different from the arcade: <br />* The attack frequency is higher than it should be, whether the character is mounted or on foot. <br />* Jumping is slow and more like floating for quite along time. <br />* The jumping sword attack is more difficult to land and not very effective. You have to push up and hold the button to jump. <br />* It's not possible to do a running jump because of the one-button controls. This means there isn't a running high jump attack, either. <br />* There's no mounting animation - players or enemies who mount beasts move instantaneously from being on foot to being on beastback. This affects gameplay. <br />* The AI is far less aggressive, making the game significantly easier. To compensate, there are no continues (the Mega Drive and PC versions give you four credits). <br />* Gameplay is generally too sluggish. <br />* The thieves' sacks do not empty so it's possible to corner them and get way more potions or food from them than you're supposed to. <br />* There's missing music. The first four main Golden Axe stages have their own themes. Here there are only two... and they're much shorter than they should be. Hearing them loop over and over again is annoying. There's also no special music for the final conflict at the end of each level. This music should be played at the entrance to the castle as well. The ending theme Sutakora, Sassa! is also missing. <br />* The sound effects played when characters die are different. In the arcade, Mega Drive and PC versions, they're screams, but here, they don't seem that bothered. <br />* The chicken donkey beasts attack both in front and behind them. <br />* There's no jumping animation - seeing enemies repeatedly try to jump up to higher ground without moving a muscle is comical. <br />* When you jump while mounted, pressing attack makes an attacking sound. No attack is made but there's no sound in the arcade version. <br />* It isn't Golden Axe. Looks a little like it but doesn't play like it. <br /> <br />Recorded at 50Hz but it feels like the game updates the screen about 15 or 20 times per second, rather than 50.
