<p>Over a quarter of China is covered either by desert or land suffering desertification, a situation which puts the country's crops and water supplies at risk. And while global warming certainly exacerbates the frequency and increase of droughts, it is not the only culprit: desertification problems cannot be addressed without tackling issues linked to over-cultivation, sprawling urban growth and water management.
