Scores of protesters marched on the U.S. Embassy en Cardenas to mark the 26th anniversary of the United States invasion. On December 20, 1989, during the administration of George H.W. Bush, tens of thousands of U.S. troops invaded Panama, then ruled by former U.S. ally, General Manuel Noriega. On January 3, Noriega was deposed and taken to the United States as a prisoner of war. Over 500 Panamanian civilians were killed along with 200 soldiers. The government announced that it will form a special independent commission to investigate the invasion. teleSUR
