Germany on Monday warned the passport-free Schengen zone was "in danger" after Nordic countries announced new controls at their borders to stem a migrant influx. In recent months, hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Asia and Africa have travelled from Greece along the so-called Balkans route to northern Europe.
