Paschimottanasana is a very good form of exercise for those suffering from menstrual problems. This asana helps to strengthen the entire back and gives stability to the body.<br /><br />History<br /><br />History has it that this pose was started in the 11th century by Gorakshanath. It is a very complete yoga posture as per the Shiva Samhita.<br /><br />Meaning<br /><br />Pashchim in Sanskrit means west and in the body it is the back side. Uttana means to straighten oneself. Asana means a posture so Paschimottanasana means to stretch the back portion of the body to the fullest.<br /><br />Technique<br /><br /> The pose starts with sitting in the Dandasana pose.<br /> Now keep the hands on the toes and breathe in with great force.<br /> Stay calm and relaxed and now try to touch the head to the knees.<br /> Now breathe out and repeat this till the head is in between both your knees.<br /> Now you can try to remain in this position after some practice.<br /> Begin by remaining for a minute and gradually increase it to three minutes.<br /> Breathe out and come back to the initial position.<br /><br />Benefits<br /><br /> Paschimottanasana is a yoga pose that is very good for the digestive system.<br /> It also aids in maintaining the blood pressure and is an ideal yoga pose for menstrual disorders.<br /> This asana maintains the appetite and thus clears the toxins inside.<br /> This yoga pose also cures the problems of the kidneys thus reducing the cramps that are typical during menstruation.<br /> Paschimottanasana also cures fatigue and tiredness and helps to maintain a balance which is essential to stay healthy during menstruation.<br /><br />Caution<br /><br />Paschimottanasana is however not good for those who have heart problems so it is advisable they do this under medical supervision.
