Egypt's new parliament convened on Sunday, the first legislature in more than three years, weeks after a legislative election that was marred by a low turnout in the absence of any opposition.<br />The 596-seat chamber was packed with supporters of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi marks the completion of a political roadmap that was announced by Sisi after overthrowing Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in 2013.<br />The first parliamentary election since the army ousted Morsi in July 2013 was held in two phases between October 17 and December 2, and saw a turnout of only 28.3 percent.<br />Sisi, the former army chief who ousted Morsi and then won presidential elections in 2014, had promised the parliamentary election as the last stage in a return to democracy after toppling his predecessor.
