In After Earth, mille anni dopo che eventi catastrofici hanno costretto l'umanità ad abbandonare la Terra, Nova Prime è diventata la nuova casa del genere umano. Il leggendario generale Cypher Raige (Will Smith) fa ritorno a casa dopo un lunghissimo turno di servizio, pronto ad assumere il ruolo di padre nei confronti del 13enne Kitai (Jaden Smith). Ma quando una tempesta di asteroidi danneggia la navicella di Cypher e Kitai, i due sono costretti a un atterraggio di emergenza sull'oramai inospitale e pericolosa Terra. Cypher nell'impatto rimane gravemente ferito e Kitai deve attraversare territori ostili nel tentativo di raggiungere il faro che, attivato, gli permetterà di richiamare i soccorsi.
