A new book tracks down the visual history of surfing from its first recording in 1778, to today's global phenomenon. <br /> <br />Cultural anthropologist Jim Heimann, editor of Surfing, has brought together 900 images that chart its evolution on and off the water, as a sport, a lifestyle and a philosophy. <br /> <br />He spoke to Dan Damon about the role that photography played in capturing the images and the spirit of surfing.
