A stunning video has emerged of a waterfall being blown backwards by strong wind near the Piton de la Fournaise volcano, on the French island of Reunion.

The footage, shot late last month, shows the moment a strong gust of wind inverts the flow of the water - spraying it upwards.

The amazed filmer explained the "surrealist and rare" phenomenon happed as "following the latest rainfalls on the plateau the rain water has created a waterfall at over 600 meters high".

He explained that the day he captured the video, the wind blew in the funnel created by the new waterfall and pushed the water upwards like a geyser.
