Notre Dame Basketball Coach Ribs Christie: He’ll Attend Our Game ‘If Trump Will Let Him’
Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey made a joke Sunday at New Jersey governor Chris Christie‘s expense, saying the former Republican presidential candidate planned to attend their next game “if Trump will let him.”
Christie was visiting the locker room after the Irish’s close 76-75 win over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in the Round of 32. His daughter Sarah attends Notre Dame and serves as a team manager, and Christie has been friends with Brey ever since he coached at his alma mater the University of Delaware.
“He only shows up for the big games,” Brey joked when asked by reporters about the governor’s presence. “He’ll be there in Philly [for the Sweet 16] — if Trump will let him.”
Brey’s joke was of course a reference to the Internet meme claiming that Christie is a hostage of Donald Trump, which emerged after Christie put on a seemingly distressed expression while standing behind Trump at a rally.
