More than fifty people were arrested as tensions ran high when protesters from both sides of the new anti-LGBT laws held competing rallies in North Carolina yesterday.<br />Hundreds of campaigners had gathered outside the statehouse yesterday in protest against the new legislation which prohibits transgender people from using the bathroom of the gender they identify with.<br />The law, passed last month in a special session, also strips lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of their state protections.<br />Republican legislative leaders have expressed no interest in overturning the new law and insist transgender people must use multi-stall restrooms that align with their gender at birth.
