Obama announced new steps Friday to help curb gun violence, including identifying the requirements that “smart guns” would have to meet for law enforcement agencies to buy and use them.<br />Smart guns use technologies to prevent an accidental shooting or help track down a missing gun.<br />The Justice and Homeland Security department said they expect to complete the work of smart-gun requirements by October.<br />The president also called for sharing mental health records with the federal background check system.<br />The Social Security Administration will publish a proposed rule to ensure mental health records of people who are prohibited from buying a gun are reported.<br />The White House will hold a conference in May on preventing gun violence.
