A 64-year-old man has become the first in the United States to undergo a successful penis transplant.<br />Thomas Manning underwent the operation in Massachusetts earlier this month. It was necessary due to his own having been amputated when he was diagnosed with penile cancer in 2012.<br /><br /> The operation took 15 hours and the organ was provided by a donor.<br /><br /> Doctors in South Africa became the first to perform the procedure successfully in 2014 after they attached a penis to a 21-year-old man whose organ had been amputated following a botched circumcision.
