PALMETTO, FLORIDA — Charles Helms and his friend were golfing at Buffalo Creek Golf Course earlier this week when they spotted a reptile moseying around the course that made them drop their clubs in awe.

Believed to be an American alligator, the massive beast began walking through the course mere yards away from them. The pair estimate the gator must have been roughly 15-feet in length. It was such a shocking site to take in, Helms can be heard on camera saying, “I think that’s two guys in an alligator suit.” Helms posted the video to Facebook on May 25.

The men tried to get as close to the alligator as possible to show just how huge it was. While it’s an eye-opening sight to most, the staff at the golf course claim the reptile’s been around for a long time, and doesn’t disturb the peace. One employee reportedly said he’s more like a mascot for the course.

For the ones who manage to live a long time, healthy male American alligators in Florida have been known to reach a maximum of 15-feet in length and weigh in at close to one thousand pounds.
