MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA — Diners at Goldie’s Coffee House got an unexpected guest after a kangaroo crashed in for breakfast on Tuesday.

According to the Helping Hands Animal Rescue in Victoria, the ‘roo had been wandering around Epping Plaza, a shopping center north of Melbourne. He hopped into Goldie’s while looking for a way out, prompting the restaurant’s staff to quickly evacuate the cafe and call for help.

Local police and an animal rescue volunteer named Heidi arrived to collect the hoppity marsupial, who’d been affectionately nicknamed Goldie.

Heidi interacted with Goldie, engaging the kangaroo by shaking her head at him. She held up a big blanket and came closer each time the ‘roo responded with a head shake of his own.

At one point, Goldie had a fit after the volunteer came too close, knocking over chairs in a frantic attempt to leave. Heidi soon had him cornered, and more head shakes later, she had him safely wrapped in the blanket with the help of a police officer

Goldie sustained minor injuries — a split lip and toenail wear — from his mall excursion. He was later released into the wild, and is now safely back with his family mob.
