BATLEY, ENGLAND — A British Labour Party MP has died after she was shot and stabbed multiple times following a constituency meeting.

Jo Cox was attacked and killed outside a library in her Batley and Spen constituency, about 200 miles north of London, the Guardian reported.

Police are investigating suspect Thomas Mair’s links to far-right organisations after he reportedly shouted ‘Britain first’ during the attack.

Witness accounts of the order of events differ. However, two witnesses told the Guardian that Mair waited for the MP to finish a surgery meeting with members of the public.

Mair shouted ‘Britain first’ before stabbing Cox with a knife, witnesses told the Guardian.

Mair then shot Cox at least twice with what one witness described to the BBC as “an old-fashioned looking gun.”

An unidentified man tried to stop the attack, while some bystanders fled, witnesses told the Guardian. Mair walked away from the scene slowly after the attack, a witness told the Guardian. Mair was arrested in a nearby street shortly afterwards.

Jo Cox had only been an MP for a year. She was a supporter of the campaign for Britain to remain a member of the European Union.
