Elite Iraqi forces backed by U.S.-led coalition strikes broke Islamic State defenses in Fallujah on Friday, seizing the municipal compound and other buildings in the center of the city.<br />The breakthrough shifted momentum in the offensive that has raged for weeks, Iraqi officials said Friday's attack was a coordinated effort by some of Iraq's best forces, including counterterrorism units, Army commandos and federal police.<br />There is still much to be done, however, as Iraqi government forces control about one-quarter of the city, the Pentagon said.<br />Holding the center of the city will also give the government troops a tactical edge, allowing the Iraqi forces to attack enemy positions from behind or on their flanks.
