Mood Indigo – Duke Ellington 1969

This clip is from a concert somewhere in Germany. After an introduction chorus of Caravan The Duke and his fabulous Orchestra play his composition “Mood Indigo” composed and recorded some forty years earlier. I think he recorded his first Mood Indigo with his Harlem Foorwarmers in 1930. It then became a regular feature for the band. While performing this tune Duke would change his frontline musicians most of the time to experience different feelings in its interpretation.
This time we see first a solo by Russell Procope on clarinet followed by a trombone solo by Lawrence Brown who has a just incredible control using his rubber mute. The third man in the frontline is bariton saxophonist Harry Carney.
