Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction became the subject of the popular podcast “Serial,” has been granted a new trial.<br />Syed has been battling for 16 years to overturn his life sentence for the murder of 18-year-old Hae Min Lee in 1999 and was seen for the first time earlier this year at an appeal trial.<br />His defence attorney announced on Twitter that they had been successful in securing a new trial for the now 35-year-old.<br />Syed's defence argued that he deserves a new trial because his lawyer during the 2000 trial, Cristina Gutierrez, was ineffective.
