My big tesla coil ("The Phoenix") running at Nottingham 2016. Power is around 7 to 8kW from a pole distribution transformer using an external ballast.
Toroid is 50 x 11 inch. Rotary is a Synchronous rotary (SRSG) with the phase control taken care of by a John Fraeu type controller. Disc is 11 inch and uses 0.25 and 0.375 inch diameter Tungsten electrodes, spaced at 10 thou clearance. The bps rate is 200 bps from 4 flying electrodes on the disc running at 3000rpm.
Max spark achieved in suitable location conditions is in excess of 10 feet.
This particular location is limited because of low ceiling height, as can be seen.
Several times in the video I deliberately set the phase wrong, and also run it lower at power, to encourage ground strikes. These periods are easily detected by the difference in the tone of the coil.
More details about the coil and equipment used at www.hvtesla.com
