Since no captain in his right mind would ever be so irresponsible as to have a shipwrecked BOOK REVIEWER (:-o) take over the helm of his ship (and a WHALING SHIP, at that), no doubt remains that JACK LONDON, far from expecting his readers to put up with such nonsense, was in truth wreaking his private vengeance on the entire profession of literary critics.
