More information surrounding two polarizing police shootings of black men that rocked the U.S. last week has come to light.

Prior to stopping Philando Castile in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a lawyer representing officer Jeronimo Yanez says his client saw that Castile had a broken tail or brake light, Minnesota newspaper the Star Tribune reported. He said Yanez thought Castile looked like an armed robbery suspect authorities were after.

Viral footage posted to Facebook by Castile’s fiance Diamond Reynolds shows the aftermath of the shooting with him bleeding in the car and Yanez aiming his gun from outside.

Castile reportedly told Officer Yanez he had a concealed carry permit. It was “because of the presence of a gun,” Yanez’s lawyer said, that his client shot him. Police say responding officers used CPR on Castile three minutes after arriving at the scene. Castile died at the scene.

Roseville police chief Mark Whig told CNN this contradicts earlier claims from the Louisiana Governor Mark Dayton that Castile did not receive CPR.

According to the Star Tribune, Castile had been pulled over 52 times since 2002 and given 86 citations for minor offences.

Meanwhile, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, more information has come to light concerning the death of Alton Sterling.

According to a search warrant affidavit, officers asked Alton Sterling to place his hands on the hood of a car last Tuesday, but he refused and officers then tasered him. The warrant says that when they were trying to subdue him, the officers saw the “butt of a gun” in Sterling’s front pocket and shot him when he tried to reach for it. Sterling died from his injuries.

Sterling had previously served time for possessing a firearm and marijuana in 2009, but it’s not clear if the officers who confronted him knew his history, CNN reported.
