KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — Twelve people died and dozens more were injured when suspected militants stormed the American University in Kabul yesterday. <br /> <br />At least seven students were among the dead, Reuters reported. <br /> <br />The attack began when a car bomb exploded at the front gate. An unknown number of suspected militants then forced their way inside the walled compound and began shooting. <br /> <br />Some students said they hid inside their classroom but were attacked with grenades thrown from outside, NBC News reported. <br /> <br />The siege was ended by Afghan security forces, who killed at least two of the gunmen. <br /> <br />Afghan police said at least 500 students were rescued during the attack, which lasted for several hours. <br /> <br />No group has claimed responsibility for the raid, which is the second time in a month the university or its staff have been targeted. <br /> <br />An American teacher and an Australian teacher remain missing after they were kidnapped at gunpoint near the university on Aug. 7.
